Mainstream vs. Underground.

Lately, I’ve been stumbling upon the words ‘mainstream’ and ‘underground’ quite a lot in the music scene. The disturbing part is however the misinterpretation that’s going on! From what I’ve observed, most of the ‘artists’ don’t know what does the terms ‘mainstream’ and ‘underground’ mean and generally classify themselves as they see fit or based on the coolness of the word ‘underground’! Pretty ludicrous and not to mention hilarious! So here I am, hoping to educate the misinformed and setting their genre straight… lets stay optimistic for now. Here are a few answers I gathered upon randomly asking a few musicians about the terms ‘mainstream’ and ‘underground’.

Question: What do you understand with the term Mainstream Music?

Answer(s): Music with no profanity (explicit content);

Music done by artists who are signed to a label;

Music done by old people;

Music recorded at a studio.

All of the above answers are WRONG. Before I proceed, let’s break it down…

Mainstream.

The urban-dictionary (www.urbandictionary.com) defines the word mainstream as :

Main•stream (mAn’strEm’), n., adj.

A genre in music and other forms of media that is often defined by widely-accepted and currently-popular standards, trends, and hypes that have been established by the media, typically resulting in the promotion of superficial traits.

So, in a nut shell, the term ‘mainstream’ music means to make music that is widely accepted by mainstream listeners or popular music per se. In even simpler terms; making music which is generally accepted by the common listener falls within this category. Let it be rock, rap, jazz, reggae, alternative etc, if its music made with the intended target audience being the average Joe who tunes in to the radio for his daily fix, it’s mainstream music. For example, the world renowned group, Nirvana, who made alternative rock music, is considered mainstream musicians even with explicit lyrics. Eminem can claim to be an underground act but quite frankly, he’s not. He makes commercial music. I hope that made sense to all. Moving on then to explore the definition of the term ‘underground’.

Underground.

The urban-dictionary (www.urbandictionary.com) defines the word underground as:

A genre in music and other forms of media intended for an elite audience, that is often characterized by its high levels of originality and experimentation, and does not conform to typical standards, trends, or hypes as set by the popular mainstream media.

Underground musicians are those who make music without the mainstream target audience in mind. Some underground musicians are rebellious so to speak, that they make music which cannot be made mainstream at all. Their target audiences are just a selected few who take pleasure in their music and simply said, that’s what the underground musician wants! He/she/they do not want rotation. They want authenticity, personal touch, self styles etc to dominate their music. Basically, they make music for themselves and to the select few whom are interested. They are NOT making music for the mass appeal. While hardcore underground musicians remain elusive, most of them are pretty much known nowadays due to the internet factor which gives almost everyone publicity. In Malaysia, most groups are conferred the ‘underground’ title just because they are unknown to commercial marketers. That is a clichĂ© that has to change eventually.

With that, I hope everyone is now clear with the terms ‘mainstream’ and ‘underground’. I personally find it unacceptable and degrading when a ‘newbie’ artist says “oh I’ve been doing underground music for 5 years now” with reference to his toilet singing days. Mainstream or Underground is not in your appearance, its in the type of music made! Rapping at your school function doesn’t make you an underground star! Just because you just started making music, DOES NOT automatically classifies you as ‘underground’. Underground is not an abbreviation for amateur. It doesn’t matter if you’re doing English, Malay or Tamil songs, the same rule applies for all. So make corrections quick or you will be corrected.

    basically this is what uve said
    -mainstream; making music with the intention of selling it n heck to make lotsa of money doing it
    -underground; making music for the sake of making music, for your friends to listen to mostly for yourself..

    question
    1. what if the ‘mainstream’ starts listening to ‘underground’ tracks n they really like it?

    mayb, just mayb, underground and mainstream are phases. starting from the undergrounf scene, n then making it to the mainstream….

    sorry for the late reply,busy weekend.

    You’ve got the basics right, but being an underground artist doesnt mean you dont want to make money either.You just dont want to make music to cater to the general mass by compromising your signature.

    As for your question, the ‘underground’ is not a restricted zone.There are many cases where mainstream listeners really like a certain underground music and the track even gets mainstream rotation, but its up to the artist basically.To remain where he/she is or to make music for the mass.Keep in mind, making ‘mainstream’ music and wanting rotation comes with a set of rules pre-set by most radio stations.lol.So usually,the artist has to alter his/her style to fit into the criteria.

    Hope that made sense, so no, its not a phase.I know some underground groups who are proud to be where they are.They worked hard to be an underground name,they didnt decide to form yesterday and automaticaly get branded as underground the next day.They worked hard.Now,it wouldnt be fair to people like that to label any tom,dick and harry as underground artist just because they are newbies!And also to be noted, mainstream heads work hard to be where they are at as well.Some of em came to get large, and they work hard at it.They never want to be labeled underground, so lets not.

    the basics is simple.it’s up to the artist. any more questions?

    nicely put bro…

    n yes, it is up to the artist… n funny enough that is why things are really messed up. claiming to be an underground act but living the lifestyle of a superstar.

    anyway, nice post bro.

    basically, he’s saying that he’s the cool underground lad.

    I see what your saying but i dont agree with the fact that ‘mainstream’ artists tailor there music just to make it big. most bands that come through already have a core fan base that usualy leave once the band gets labbled ‘mainstream’. in short, you must compromise your style to become underground if that is where you want to go with your music.

    i was always of the opinion that underground music was artists that didn’t conform but now by trying to be underground you are by your very nature conforming arnt u?

    In my humble opinion,your idea of underground doesnt necessarily fit the description of underground in my eyes of course.
    i mean if we do follow up on the terminology according to every underground musician in M’sia, i would assume base from a normal persons point of view that Malaysia’s underground scenes are filled with close carbon copies of the oh-so-familiar mannerisms of rappers we may or may not know. So does that contribute as underground as well?
    of course, i would agree that “originality” and “self-satisfaction” was closely definitive of underground if it wasnt such an objective subject. However, i know that there are underground musicians that you speak of, here’s the funny, hardly any here in M’sia..perhaps a few, yes but i don’t blame any rapper. i understand, we all be lying if we didnt say money or a degree of fame didnt motivate us to make that album whether “mainstream” like or “underground. I find it trivial really.Give me good music i would love to listen to and songs that would let me embark on a journey through every cranny and crook of the writer’s mind and soul. maybe i should start listening to the blues…less depressing than the recent music shown on MTV. haha, dont get made at me mmm-kay.
    cant help it if i’m sarcastic at ppl sometimes.
